Critical Pedagogy in the Arts Therapies Announces Restoring and Re-Storying the Disciplines
After meeting for a “think tank” at New York University this past March, our friends at Critical Pedagogy in the Arts Therapies, Dr. Savneet Talwar and Leah Gipson, have confirmed a conference of their own! ITA is happy to share that Critical Pedagogy in the Arts Therapies: Restoring and Re-Storying the Disciplines will take place at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in Chicago, Illinois on September 14 and 15, 2018. This is a great milestone for CPAT, and Talwar has expressed that she feels “fortunate to have a space to organize such a conference”.
Are you curious about what Restoring and Re-Storying the Disciplines will discuss? See below for a short description of the conference from Talwar herself.
“As critical pedagogy in arts therapies is an approach to teaching and learning that asserts that the central purpose of education is to address inequality and oppression by identifying and working to transform relationships of power. This conference will address questions about equity and social justice and its application for teaching, supervision, mentoring, and research in the arts therapies. Issues of power, privileged and oppression are vital to understand, especially given the highly charged political climate we live in and its impact on the everyday life of the people we serve. The conference explores questions such as: When do we risk reinforcing oppression? How do we understand health, illness, and care? How do we move from ‘power over’ to ‘power with’ and ‘power within’ stance?”
