Often times we confront obstacles in our daily lives which can be very challenging to deal with emotionally. Difficult relationships, financial struggles, illness or physical limitations can make us feel unhappy or alone. It is helpful during such times to have an opportunity to share your feelings with others and try to find ways to cope with the problems you are facing. At ITA, we understand not everyone is able to put their feelings into words and sometimes cannot even identify what is causing feelings of pain and sadness.
Through engagement in the creative arts therapies, individuals have the opportunity to explore feelings in depth and discuss the art making experience with a trained therapist. Creating artistic products can be an effective coping tool as new talents and strengths are discovered which can increase feelings of self-worth. Some clients find it easier to express their emotions when they are put into a song, an image, a story or a physical movement. The creative arts therapists at ITA can then help to identify what is being communicated through the art.
ITA works individually with clients of all ages to address emotional concerns. Therapists also work in hospitals, finding ways to help patients cope with illness or injuries. In many settings such as nursing homes, substance abuse treatment centers, and inner-city community centers, clients are striving to maintain a quality of life despite the challenges they are facing in their daily environment. ITA therapists frequently present to community members, health care professionals and caretakers on the benefits of using the creative arts to promote wellness.
