Bottle Cap Collaging? How does that work?
Saturday mornings, the First Presbyterian Church of Evanston holds Souper Saturday, an open meal time for individuals struggling with homelessness or financial distress. ITA is partnering with the First Presbyterian Church to engage guests in a collective meaningful art project that will provide a sense of community, connection, and unification. The art project will focus on Upcycling, a term used to describe the artistic process of taking old, used, non-functional items and utilizing them to make art. This approach is beautifying recycled items that are otherwise identified as trash or unneeded to demonstrate a powerful metaphor for transformation and the idea that everything has value.
The Souper Saturday guests will be upcycling colored plastic bottle caps, collected by the First Presbyterian church members, into a collaborative wall piece of a bird and the Psalm 91:4 quote, “Under his wings you will find refuge”. Each bottle cap will contain a personalized collage by the guests that will be added to a recycled wood base that will, over time, create an image. The final artwork will provide a central visual piece that will hang in the soup kitchen’s dining space and contribute to the visual atmosphere and ambience of the space at the First Presbyterian Church.
