Art Therapy Intern Andria Duncan Reports on Progress of Upcycle Art Project
In mid-October, ITA’s Art Therapy Intern, Andria Duncan, kicked off the Community Upcycle Art Project with the First Presbyterian Church of Evanston’s Souper Saturday soup kitchen members. Upcycle began with the introduction and overview of the project. Members passed around a sample of a completed weave design made of plastic yarn, or plarn, as a reference to how they may being their art design. Group members had the opportunity to choose their plastic bag colors, and then cut and organize their plastic bags into upcycled plarn. Members later learned basic weave techniques to create their weave pattern on the paper plate weaving loom.

Art-makers at First Presbyterian Church
of Evanston pool their creative energies
Various Souper Saturday members contributed to the project by adding their personal creative touch. Multiple individuals have written a scripture or faith-based quote that they wish to attach and display in the final art piece. Others contributed by including personal artistic styles to the project that ranged from paper origami to colorful circle mandalas. During each project session, there is more than simply making individual art pieces. Members support and inspire each other in collaborative creative art-making. They use the time together to exchange images of their personal art and connect with one another’s life stories. Together, ITA and the First Presbyterian Church of Evanston are creating a sense of community by interacting, supporting, and inspiring each other through the creation of art.
