Parenting

August 15, 2015 by ITA Staff

Of all the jobs in the world, the one that comes with the least amount of directions or how-to-do instructions is parenthood. No amount of friendly advice or reading “what to expect” books will provide first time parents with enough knowledge to be ready to face all that will besiege them. There is so much to contemplate when a child comes into the world “typical.” When special needs or medical issues complicate any birth, an entirely different set of rules are set into motion.

Parenting is a job that never ends. Unlike other employment, parenting isn’t something that can be left at the end of the day and vacations from parenthood do not really exist, but there is no reason to believe parents need to have all the answers, or go it alone. Therapists at ITA are available to provide opportunities to explore options, problem solve, and access expression by using the creative arts of music, drama, art and dance/movement.

Services for parents may include parent “coaching” in which strategies are discussed which can assist in behavior management.  Supportive services are also available for parents as individuals or couples where opportunities are provided to explore personal struggles and find ways to cope with challenging circumstances.

At ITA we understand parents often forget to take time for themselves and want to encourage self-care through the form of creative arts therapy.  Through this process, personal strengths are enhanced and concerns can be expressed, understood and reflected upon in order to insure healthy emotional well-being and, in turn, a more patient, compassionate parent.
