Institute for Therapy through the Arts

Create. Grow. Heal.

Ashley Leonard, AMFT, ATR

Art Therapist

Ashley is an Art Therapist and associate Marriage and Family Therapist. While in her master’s program, she completed her clinical internship at San Francisco VA Medical Center working with dually diagnosed veterans suffering from a variety of mental health conditions. She also has experience working in a diverse range of settings including inpatient and outpatient hospital settings, assisted living facilities, schools, and outpatient mental health clinics. In each of these settings, Ashley has gained experience working with individuals facing a variety of stressors and difficulties, including chronic and serious mental health conditions, anxiety, depression, family issues, significant life transitions, adolescent issues, and trauma. In her work, Ashley operates from a feminist theoretical framework that is trauma-informed. She believes in the healing power of art and creative expression and that each person is inherently creative and has the power and ability to generate insight and healing. Ashley also enjoys incorporating mindfulness practices into her work and believes it to be a great complement to creative expression.
