It’s the most wonderful time of the year…or is it? While the snow and holiday lights may look beautiful, sometimes the winter blues (and diminished sunshine) can make it hard to experience the holiday glow it seems that everyone else is feeling. Here are a few tips for staying well and making the most of the season:
- Set aside moments to catch up with family and friends. Whether you live near or far, one casual phone call can light up their day and yours!
- Don’t be afraid to take time for yourself! There’s no shame in curling up on the couch with your favorite hot chocolate and watching a movie if that’s what can help you relax.
- Nothing will make you feel warmer than giving back! Try volunteering for a cause you find meaningful, or donating to a local charity. You will probably meet some wonderful people, too!
- Find different music to suit your different moods! Need to amp yourself up for a holiday party? Hoping to decompress after a long day of family reunions? Listen to music that suits your mood!
- Don’t be afraid of the cold! Try a brisk walk through the winter wonderland or even take a cold shower in the morning. Cold exposure is good for your skin, amping up your energy, and even stimulating weight loss!
- Spread some cheer to your coworkers! You can make someone’s workday more pleasant with just a simple compliment, and it’s always nice to let your work buddies know that you appreciate them.
- Count to ten. Patience and deep breaths can help get you through almost any stressful encounter, whether that be with the in-laws or in line at the toy store. Rather than being upset, try to find a way to laugh about it! It’s all about counting your blessings and finding perspective.
- Be creative! Join your local community theater, take part in an art or dance class, or finally start learning that instrument you’ve always wanted to play! Finding an outlet for creative expression is a surefire way to feel great and gain impressive skills in the meantime!
Speaking of creative outlets, ITA would like to invite you to our two newest wellness groups! Whether you’re feeling stressed or you’d simply like to try something new, these wellness groups are perfect for you. “Midday Music Break” is a break from the autopilot workday, enabling working adults to recharge through drumming, re-creating favorite songs, and songwriting. No musical experience necessary! “Unplug” offers theater games and improvisation for adults that need to unwind and unleash some healthy creativity.
